Crafty Tuesday...DIY Mini Chalkboard

Ok, so I haven't done a Crafty Tuesday post in awhile, but my craftiness has absolutely not been abandoned!
Chalkboard paint is the new craft craze these days and I was eager to create something. The only materials that I found for a writing center (in my teacher stash and materials in the center) were white boards. What ever happened to chalkboards? So there was my little project: I made mini chalkboards for my preschool classroom!
Very simple and quick to make!
I just grabbed 2 mini clip board & paper sets at the Dollar Tree and picked up some chalkboard paint at Michaels. (I love that these 2 stores are two doors down from each other in the same plaza! Makes shopping easy, but sometimes not so great on my pocket!)
Anyhow, each clipboard needed two coats of paint and I waited at least an hour between each coat.
And within 3 hours time, I had some cute little mini chalkboards- and paper pads--that are going to
go into my Writing Center!!

We Love Our Four Legged Friends!

Today we began our mini learning unit on Pets. And we know a whole lot about pets, as we should!
We have 7 furry and four legged family members in our household:
Two dogs, Two cats and Three guinea pigs!
Both of our dogs were purchased from reputable breeders and we have had them since they were 8 week old puppies. Both cats have been adopted from Rescue Shelters (in different years). And the piggies just came along one day...Basically I saw them, they needed a forever home and they gave me one look and I had to have them! It was originally supposed to be just one, but I went back for the other, who turned out to be pregnant. The light brown one (Cupcake) is the one baby I kept. Mommy piggie, Brownie, is camera shy and refused to look at the camera during our photo shoot!
Okay, sorry I went off on a tangent... I can talk about my fur babies forever!
It's quite the zoo in here some days. But we love it and each one owns a very special piece of our hearts! I love them all!
Anyhow, so now we are going to devote some time to learning more about different kinds of pets and how to care for them.
The Reading Corner has a special bin of Pet & Animal themed books--with Pete the Cat, Clifford and Pigeon being some of our favorites!
We read the book Pets by Hannah Wilson and John Butler to begin a discussion on pet needs. After we read and discussed the book, I had the munchkin brainstorm ideas on What a Pet Needs:
(My favorite was when she said that pets need a leash to go outside for a walk- but NOT cats! She freaks out when she sees a cat outside b/c I always tell her the cats are not allowed outside)
For this mini Pet Unit, I created word wall cards of common pet names and the little munchkin practiced her writing and matched each pet name to the picture.
I created some work on Beginning Sounds as well.
I will be uploading these printables as soon as I finish tweaking a few things!
Hmmm...I MAY even give them away as a Freebie this week...
During this mini unit, I will also be using two learning packs created by two different homeschooling moms! Each pack has many printables to give children practice in a variety of skills. These printables will be on her clipboards for independent practice.
Dog Pack by Homeschool Creations:
Here is a Patterning sheet from this pack:
Cat Pack by 1+1+1=1:
Here is an Alphabet tracing and fill in the blank sheet from this pack:
(Click on either packet picture or the blog link to get your own free copy of these fun learning printables)
We have so many fun learning activities planned for this mini unit and we are just getting started!
(Do I sound too excited?)

Let the Creative Writing Begin!

So, I thought this month was going to be easier than it has been. I have been micromanaging the household more than ever... and I am ready for a little break! But with the little munchkin's PreK Graduation around the corner and summer right behind it, there will be no break anytime soon for this momma...
As I have been busy and have been trying to keep my sanity lately, I have had little to no time to create or search & print fun learning things for the munchkin to do. I have reverted to changing out her work trays and putting out simple activities, such as games and practice sheets to review skills that she already knows. Review is always good! BUT...Since it is review, she whizzes through it and asks for more.
The other day, she brought home a picture of something she drew at school and spent almost 10 minutes telling me all about it. That was my moment right there: I knew it was time to really get started with some kind of journaling.
I found a marker/watercolor pad in one of my zillion boxes of teacher stuff and found some fun stickers in my scrapbooking stuff.
I used mod podge to paste the journal cover onto the drawing pad.
 She decorated her journal cover:
Her drawing skills are a work in progress and to help encourage her to create stories for her journal, I gathered random stickers from her sticker books and let her create away!
After she created each picture, she went on and on to tell me all about it. I tried my best to keep up with all of it and wrote down her words. (It is important when journaling with children to not try and correct their sentences too much. It is their own story, after all.)
Here are a few of the stickers stories that she has made:
These are her first genuine little stories and I will cherish these forever!!
I have now created a Creative Journal Kit for her:
I found an empty scrapbooking storage box and I have added in some smelly markers (kids love them!) and some more random stickers that I picked up at the Dollar Tree. Now when she wants to do any creative writing (or drawing), all she has to do it grab her box!  I also plan to switch up writing utencils and creative tools (stickers, random photos, etc) to encourage her creative writing in many different ways!
Do you do any kind of journaling with your munchkins?

Freebie Friday: Two FREE things for you to check out today!

Alright, it's that time again! It's Friday and time for a Freebie! And today is extra awesome because not only do I have a freebie for you from my own creation, I want to share a new app that I discovered, which is FREE on iTunes.
I am sure everyone has heard of Rosetta Stone, right? Well, did you know there is now a new and FREE Rosetta Stone App for Kids?
I don't remember how I came across it... I believe it was a Facebook ad. It's called Rosetta Stone Kids: Lingo Letter Sounds.
It is a fun interactive app where the Gogo Lingos talk to you and they can hear you too when you speak into the microphone.
There are two activities in this app.
One is a Letter & Sound Matching Game and the other is a listening and speaking game, where you can hear a phrase in Spanish and then repeat it.
The Listening and Speaking Game is our favorite:
If you repeat the phrase in a similar way in which they say it, the little Gogo Lingos will start dancing!
It is very cute!!
We love it!
The other game is a Letter & Sound Matching Game:
Click on the App Photo to check it out for yourself. It's FREE on iTunes!
Rosetta Stone Kids: Lingo Letter Sounds
And I just found another FREE one that we are going to try out:
Rosetta Stone Kids: Lingo Word Builder
Lots of Spanish Learning FUN!
(*This review and the opinions about these apps are my own and I was not asked or paid to promote these products.)
And now to my FREEBIE for you!
I am getting ready to start Journal writing with the little munchkin because she has been bringing home drawings from school and tells me lengthy stories about the pictures. So, it is time to document this!
I haven't decided whether I want to just print off journal pages or get a little notebook and let her decorate it. So, I just created a quick journal template just in case I decide to print off pages as we go. And it's yours FREE today!
I have included two different formats; one without lines and one with lines. ENJOY!

Is there a thin line between love & hate for snow days?

Oh, snow days how I love thee. But enough already...ok?
I wonder if there is a thin line between love & hate when it comes to snow days? Sure, I know kids love them. But how do adults feel?
I think alot of people can honestly say that they are going a little stir crazy today... I know I am! The kids and I have been holed up in the house since Monday afternoon. It has been far too cold (in Buffalo) to leave the house and I admit, it is starting to get to me and I can tell it is driving my muchkin a little mad. The routine is all messed up and meltdowns (from the little munchkin) are happening throughout the day!
The one good thing about snow days is that it allows me extra time with the kiddos. And I have been able to get the learning fun back on track after the long holiday break.
But I will be glad when the kids are back in school tomorrow... they need the structure and routine back... and I need to get a handle on my own sanity!  =)
Anyhow, over the winter break when I had some downtime, I did some searching on TPT, and I have found yet another favorite seller: Lavinia Pop. She has some awesome packets. I purchased a few of her Winter (math & literacy) packets to use with my daughter throughout the month of January.

I put together a  little January Work binder for the munchkin and she will pick and choose a few activities that she wants to complete during our random "work times" or at any given time during the week.

When school started up in September, I chose not to have an established work time, simply because some days she was too tired after school and other days, all she wanted to do was work. So, now we just go with the flow. I think it will be easier to have worksheets like these on hand along with other manipulatives to complete them, (rather than just pencils and crayons), so they are ready when she wants them.
Today it felt right to read a few winter books and focus on some winter vocabulary. And this pack (also by Lavinia Pop) came in handy.
We chose 10 Winter Words to put in our pocket chart.

We reviewed each word, focusing on the beginning sound. I then cut out the pictures of the words she chose and she glued each picture and copied each word onto the pages of her Winter Words book.

She was very excited to "read" her Winter Words book when she was done!
And of course, she had to make a snowman! I came to notice that she was bringing home alot of artwork from school, and a huge chunk of it was simple shapes that the children may or may not have cut out themselves and glued together-- not very much process art. I mean, I can understand why preschool teachers would have children do art this way; I have done it myself at times.
But for the sake of art variety, I am going to continue to focus on providing the little munchkin with somewhat open-ended process art activities at home. Plus, I love to see what children's imaginations create in art, especially hers!
So here is the process art snowman she made:
She was ectastic when my son and I joined in on the art activity. (And later told daddy he needed to make one!)
And the snack of the day was..... Donut Snowman!!
Well, the snow days have been fun. But now it is time to get the kiddos back into school and get that routine started up again! I just hope there are no more crazy snowstorms in the near future that would cause everyhing to shut down again!
BUT-- I am in Buffalo, so ya never know!!

Fantastic Flower Fun... and a writing FREEBIE!!

Alright, so I have somehow managed to maintain my sanity the past 2 weeks, but I dont know how much longer that is going to last! My child who was on short term exclusion is returning this week AND I have to work on finishing up my End of the Year Academic Assessments (and 2 other final assessments), as well as start planning our Moving Up Ceremony
I will try to manage as best as I know how b/c it is all almost over! And Summer Vacation is on the horizon! YAY!!
Last year, my little one and I did several (and I mean SEVERAL) flower activities. This year for our Garden Theme, we have been doing flower activities but have also been putting more focus on letter activities.

She has been learning the letters Ff and Gg and since she shocked me and almost brought me to tears the other day with this writing (which she did all on her own just by looking at my writing):
I decided to follow her lead with starting some writing with her. I created two writing mini-books for her, with letter Ff words and letter Gg words. (I have also just made mini-books for the other 2 letters that we have been learning about this month.)
Click on the pictures below to download a FREE copy of the Letter Ff and Letter Gg Mini-Books!

And this little sponge of mine has also shown signs of learning that she is learning the concepts of print. I caught her tracking print the other night when I was reading her a bedtime story. Once she fell asleep, I pulled out a pocket chart, some sentence strips, colored some flowers and put together a little Flower Colors sentence activity. And I made a little pocket to put the flowers inside.
She LOVED it! The best part was when she played it for the 3rd time and said, Mommy, I love this game!
I have also been wanting to try Easel Starters, which is an art idea that  have seen on one of my very favorite blogs, Teach Preschool.
We read the book: This Is the Sunflower and then talked about flowers and the parts of flowers.
I pulled out the easel that we found for $7 at a garage sale down the street! Since she already has one, we decided to make this one the Outdoor Easel.
I put a circle shape on the paper (I meant to glue some sunflower seeds inside of it, but I forgot!) and then allowed her to create her own (flower) painting.

How many of you have started your End of the Year Countdown??
I have 13 days to go!
How many more days do you have left???
